FAQ

The sugarcane straws (Standard Compost Material) are made of sugarcane fibers and Polylactic Acid extracted from tapioca starch, commonly known as PLA.

The sugarcane straws (Home Compost Material) are made of sugarcane fibers and JCPFM© which is a new material without PLA invented by our team.

Our sugarcane straws are heatproof up to 70°C/158°F, we recommend you to use them in cold or warm drinks.

Sugarcane straws should be stored at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture. Both straws made with Standard Compost Material and Home Compost Material can be stored up to 12 months. It is completely natural that sugarcane straws show signs of fragmentation after the recommended storage period. However, without any apparent deformation, they can still withstand normal usage.

Sugarcane straws are initially designed to replace single-use plastic straws, they are reusable and remain sturdy after soaking in water for days. However, we recommend usage no more than one day due to sanitary reasons. You don’t have to feel bad tossing them away because they are 100% plant based and compostable.

It depends on the material of straws. The sugarcane straws (Standard Compost Material) can be decomposed within 24 weeks in a stable environment with high heat, moisture and soil properties while in a natural cases it tends to take longer time. The sugarcane straws ( Home Compost Material) can be decomposed over 70 % within 12 weeks, 100% within approximately 24 weeks, all under a natural condition.
Please refer to our page Science of decomposition.

Our sugarcane straws are 「PIDC」certified and do not contain any plastics such as PS, PE, PP, PVC, and PET.

The process of producing sugarcane straws is strictly monitored to provide you a clean, natural choice to plastic alternatives. We follow the standard of EU’s REACH legislation and our straws are SVHC certified.

According to research, a single-use plastic straw needs up to 200 years to degrade. As a result, billions of them end up in landfills and the ocean every day. Besides this, plastic straws are petroleum sourced and since they are not degradable, they also pose a harmful influx and microplastic pollution to our environment. Sugarcane straws are plant-based, naturally sourced and compostable. They are developed because we want to invite you to take part in the action of making our planet a better world to live in, with a small change of behavior you can make.

Making paper straws involves deforestation. Despite being seemly natural, some paper straws are coated with plastic coatings and dyes, which make them a way less sustainable choice than sugarcane straws. In terms of usage and durability, sugarcane straws don’t get soggy in drinks even after 24 hours and can withstand several times of usage.

PLA straws are made of bioplastic polymer. Sugarcane straws are partially made of PLA and plant fiber. Our fiber is locally sourced from farmers, in order to help them deal with the mass amount of agricultural waste, such as sugarcane fibers and coffee grounds. We are a social enterprise dedicated in innovation who cares not just about the environment, but also communities. Our goal is to realize the circular economy followed by the 17 SDGs and bring the nature closer to your life. Next time when you have our straws in hand, bring them close to your nose and take a sniff, you can smell the caramel scent of sugarcane as you were right there, in a sugarcane field !

Despite the durability, the carbon footprint of making a metal straw is way higher than a sugarcane straw. It is also hard to keep them hygienic without proper cleaning. Similar to plastic straws, stainless metal straws also need more than 200 years to degrade and due to modern recycling technologies, they often became metal waste in the ocean and landfills.
